We're baaaaack...

One year later... We are headed back to Vienna! Yea!
Flow House this time. And a longer stay (for some of us, at least).

Three days until we fly, so a few musings before we get this party started.

"BEEN THERE DONE THAT": Things we absolutely don't need to see/do again.
  1. The Prater
  2. Opera House Tour
  3. Freud Museum
  4. Hundertwasser Haus
  5. Schonbrunn Palace
  6. Tourist Symphony Performance
  7. Klimt Exhibits
  8. Prague
  9. Bratislava
  10. Schmetterling House
"GIMME SECONDS": Things we want and must see again.
  1. Leopold Museum
  2. Rathaus Film Festival
  3. Ottakringer
  4. More Impulstanz. Because you can never have too much Impulstanz.
  5. Gigantic Schnitzel the size of my head
  6. The Elephant at the Museum of Natural History
  7. Riding Trams everywhere
  8. Nasch Markt
  9. Eskrima training with the Austrian team
  10. Sausages and more sausages!
"I'LL TRY THAT": Things we are looking forward to seeing/doing/experiencing
  1. A roasted pork knee (drool).
  2. Pour your own scotch store (Hugh)
  3. Meat served in a wheelbarrow with kegs served at the table
  4. Salzburg (fresh Alp air and the Sound of Music...)
  5. City Markets not called "Nasch"
  6. Wine tasting near Vienna Woods
  7. Finding "mangalitsa ham" at Urbanek at the Naschmarkt, then finding Herta the butcher who will roll it and fry it into a "cordon bleu", a la Anthony Bourdain's episode in Vienna. See my inspiration here (start at 10:40 of the video)
  8. Albertina Museum
  9. The Cafe at Salettl Pavillion (a la Hugh and Alyssa's recommendation)
  10. Other stuff that awaits!

  1. Forgive my butchered spelling of German words and names, but here are comments on your "I'll try that list"

    1) I mentioned to Christina that you should call the schweizerhaus in advance and book a table by the playground so you can drink beer and eat pork knee while Evie plays to her heart's content.

    2) There is one Vom Fass you can walk to in the 18th district. I think you walk down the hill to the circle and turn right on Cottagegasse and when that street ends you just need to jog left and go .5 blocks.
    3) There are a bunch of Centimeters in town one is walking distance (above T. Park and to the left) and another is 2 stops on the U-bahn. We didn't have a favorite.

    5) Our favorite market was near the Vom Fass on Waringer Strasse. If you leave the U-bahn at WaringerStrasse and take Waringer Strasse a few blocks away from downtown (1/4 mile?) you will see it on the left. Organic produce there is a bargain and the Turkish Pizza at the stand at the top of block is excellent (and they will sing American woman off key to you every time you walk by once they know you).
    6) Lots of good choices here including one you can walk to on the way to Grinzing (I don't remember the name, but you head down the hill, turn left on Blasstrasse and it you turn right on the street one before Paradisegasse. It is just over a mile walk. It is listed online as the top Heurigen in the 19th district and the one that hadn't become a tourist trap.

Also speaking of the woods, walk up to the top of T. Park, catch the tram going to the right all the way to the end of the line (it is either the 40 or the 41 I don't remember which, but only one goes along the street at the top of the park.

You are now in the Vienna woods only 10-15 minutes after leaving home and it is a very pretty place to walk. There also looked like in the summer there would be a good place to grab a beer on one of the corners of the park.

    9) CafféCouture, Garnisongasse 18 is an easy tram ride from the house and is one of the best cups of coffee in the world (and has won the prize for the best coffee in Austria multiple times). it will probably close for the summer soon, but it is one of the first places I would go. Tell Georg I sent you. You get to pick what you want to pay, but I could never get him to let me pay more than what the bad cafes charged for their coffee even from the first time I walked in.
    10) Find some Ottorocker and drink it for me. It comes in a black can and I only found it at Merkur, but Merkur should be on your list anyway as it is the best grocery store walking distance from the house.

Have a fabulous trip and I'll be following the blog with envy!
