Getting Settled

Guten morgen!

We are happily breakfasting in our new Flow House apartment...Jeffrey is eating leftover schnitzel and Evie and I had cereal. I think we slept 10 hours last night- Evie closer to 12 hours! Today we will tour around downtown and buy train tickets for Salzburg, where we'll head tomorrow until Tuesday. Appropriate spinning and singing atop the hills of Austria will ensue (although we'll avoid the touristy "Sound of Music" tour).

Yesterday's Turkenschanz Park visit was delightful, and our visit to the local SPAR Market for staples was followed by 1 euro scoops of gelato at a nearby place called LIMONCELLO. It felt like a blurry, lost day yesterday because of jetlag but we are rearing to go now. Evie woke up and got excited all over again about her new toys. Hugh, Alyssa...you guys are the bomb!

Glad to be back

Hey Peeps, we arrived. The flight from Charlotte to Frankfurt went off without a hitch, all things considered. Other than a little turbulence outside of Vienna (which led to some minor projectile vomit), both flights went fairly smoothly and we arrived in Vienna only a few minutes delayed.

The Flow House apartment is bigger than we remembered. (for those that don't know, we are staying at the WFU Flow House in the 19th District. A pretty area, not too near the center of town, completely opposite the area we stayed in 2010. I will blog about the house in a later entry...). A brief search turned up a treasure of goodies left for us, compliments of the Howards family. Hugh, Alyssa - Thanks so much! the red stroller rocks, as do the 3 gigantic bags of toys and box of treats - can't thank you enough.

Not surprisingly we were all a little disoriented and jet lagged when we arrived. After a short unpacking and nap, we took a stroll up the street to the Turkenschantz park and playgrounds. The Turk is a massive park, one of the nicer and larger ones in Vienna. It has 2-3 playgrounds, ponds, fountains, statues of famous Austrian dudes, AND A RESTAURANT THAT SERVES BEER AND SCHNITZEL. So you pretty much know where we went first...

We're baaaaack...

One year later... We are headed back to Vienna! Yea!
Flow House this time. And a longer stay (for some of us, at least).

Three days until we fly, so a few musings before we get this party started.

"BEEN THERE DONE THAT": Things we absolutely don't need to see/do again.
  1. The Prater
  2. Opera House Tour
  3. Freud Museum
  4. Hundertwasser Haus
  5. Schonbrunn Palace
  6. Tourist Symphony Performance
  7. Klimt Exhibits
  8. Prague
  9. Bratislava
  10. Schmetterling House
"GIMME SECONDS": Things we want and must see again.
  1. Leopold Museum
  2. Rathaus Film Festival
  3. Ottakringer
  4. More Impulstanz. Because you can never have too much Impulstanz.
  5. Gigantic Schnitzel the size of my head
  6. The Elephant at the Museum of Natural History
  7. Riding Trams everywhere
  8. Nasch Markt
  9. Eskrima training with the Austrian team
  10. Sausages and more sausages!
"I'LL TRY THAT": Things we are looking forward to seeing/doing/experiencing
  1. A roasted pork knee (drool).
  2. Pour your own scotch store (Hugh)
  3. Meat served in a wheelbarrow with kegs served at the table
  4. Salzburg (fresh Alp air and the Sound of Music...)
  5. City Markets not called "Nasch"
  6. Wine tasting near Vienna Woods
  7. Finding "mangalitsa ham" at Urbanek at the Naschmarkt, then finding Herta the butcher who will roll it and fry it into a "cordon bleu", a la Anthony Bourdain's episode in Vienna. See my inspiration here (start at 10:40 of the video)
  8. Albertina Museum
  9. The Cafe at Salettl Pavillion (a la Hugh and Alyssa's recommendation)
  10. Other stuff that awaits!
